Nurse, Hospital Security Guard Attacked By Montco Patient: Reports


HATFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA — A Montgomery County man is facing felony charges in connection with an alleged attack on hospital staff in Hatfield Township, according to media reports and court records.

Jose Ortiz-Leiva, 42, of Lansdale, has been charged with felony aggravated assault, as well as lesser charges of simple assault, harassment and possessing an instrument of crime after he reportedly assaulted a nurse and security guard with a mop handle during an incident at the emergency room of Jefferson Lansdale Hospital.

The website North Penn Now is reporting that the incident happened on the evening of July 7 when police officers were called to the hospital after a report of a patient assaulting staff members.

Hospital workers reportedly told police that Ortiz-Leiva was yelling, refusing to take medications, and then went on the attack with the mop handle, the story says.

Court records show that Ortiz-Leiva was arraigned on July 26 and that he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 9 before Magisterial District Judge Andrea Hudak Duffy.

Records state that the defendant was sent to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility after failing to post cash bail.

Court records show that the defendant is being represented by Norristown-based defense attorney Brooks Thomas Thompson.
